I know of a family who built a straw bale house. Never did hear how they
liked it. Lot of info online I think.
I have heard of bamboo blinds from china with termites in them, but that
was 40 years ago at least. Most things might be already fumigated these
days, but whether the crates themselves are also fumigated?

Also, check out "papercrete" and "padobe", "rammed earth" and "cob".
Lots of interesting ways to build a house, depending on where you want
to live, and some are very cheap but labor intensive.
