Interesting question. I should run a 'real' test but it seems to me I get better DW from my distiller if I let it get a little crusty, the lowest uS readings come in about the middle, when some deposits have developed but before they get extreme.

Sorry to have created such a long off topic thread with aluminum cookware. However, the issue of leaching nickel into foods/water could be serious for me. No matter how minute the amounts of any substance, if there is an allergy, that minute amount might be enough added to other, truly unavoidable sources to kick off a big problem.

Everything is relative (referring to Ole Bob's comment that is a frivolous OT topic and of no concern). If it hadn't been of concern to me, I wouldn't have mentioned it. But I should have posted to the OT list from the start.

How much comes out in water, or in a frypan?
My still is made of stainless, and when the pot is clean I get 0.4 PPM TDS.
I wonder how much of that is nickel and chromium?

But is there any REALLY safe alternative? Stainless Steel contains chromium
and
nickel. Nickel is toxic, and can actually eat holes in your stomach, and
chromium can be in two forms. The trivalent and hexavalent. Apparently
according to the movie "Erin Brockovich" (
http://www.mindfully.org/Water/Chromium-4800-Systems-Test.htm ) trivalent is
not
too bad but the hexavalent form is horribly toxic to animals and humans.
