Pat, You don't have to have such an extreme reaction, you can cut the pills in half or quarter (1/4, I'd suggest). Find an amount that doesn't make you uncomfortable, take that every day for awhile (week or two usually), gradually increase, each time taking that new amount until the flush stops, then increasing again. You want to flush very mildly, maybe just a small tingle.
The non-flushing niacin (niacinamide) may not be as effective. The doctors who use niacin to treat schizophrenia say that the non-flushing niacinimide does not work. Niacinimide is used for high cholesterol, schizophrenia, alcoholism and other blood sugar issues. It is also effective with diabetes. Here is an excerpt: Niacinamide helps support function of the pancreas DENMARK -- A few years ago, researchers found that nicotinamide [the amide, more water-soluble form of niacin (vitamin B3)] was able to restore the beta cells of the pancreas, or at least slow down their destruction. (Nicotinamide in this country is more commonly referred to as niacinamide.) Niacinamide is readily available and generally considered very safe. It differs from niacin in that it doesn't cause flushing or dilation of blood vessels. Adult patients were given niacinamide dosages of approximately 25 milligrams a day for every two pounds of body weight. (For example, a 150 pound adult was given around 1,875 milligrams a day.) At high dosages, much higher than those referred to here, it may cause a degree of sedation, a feeling of depression and in very large dosages, liver toxicity. http://www.drdavidwilliams.com/c/blood_sugar_health_recs.asp Kathleen A. Head, N.D., reported on the value of niacinamide in preventing and treating diabetes. This is a very technical treatise. http://www.thorne.com/altmedrev/fulltext/diabetes2-4.html If you are using niacin, the key is gradually increasing it at a comfortable rate.
