Carol,
Believe me, you NEVER reach 1000 ma!
That is the spec of the upper limit of the device. In other words,
it's fine for your application because it will never overheat and
meltdown at the current that YOUR application uses (which would be
less than 5 ma).
It's the upper safe limit specification of the device.
