I haven't had a spam in years. The reason is that I use http://www.mailshell.com One can use their "Pro" service which is what I have. A domain name is obtained which allows an unlimited number of email addresses to be utilized. No website is necessary and I don't have one. Anyway, when I need an email address for a specific purpose, for example when I get a new piece of software from a new company I create a new address for that company (i.e.: [email protected]...) to obtain mailings announcing improvements, etc. Then if I suddenly begin to get spam addressed to that address I know that it has either been "mined" from their website (by use of a spider program), or worse, my address has been sold to spammers (something most legitimate companies avoid doing). All I have to do to avoid further spam is to kill the offending address and poof...no more spam. Presently I have eighty five addresses using that method and have no problem whatsoever with spam.
I am not sure what the yearly charge is for this service (it is nominal considering the benefits), but I know that for me the spam problem doesn't exist any more. Of course I do have about six levels of security on my PC including anti-virus, anti-worm, anti-malware and so forth. It behooves one to also be aware of opening email attachments and the consequences involved in doing so. The method described above is just another one available in the ongoing struggle against the constant irritation of spam. Jim Wright -----Original Message----- From: Ode Coyote Every time I change my email address, spam goes to nearly zero then gradually builds up for the next few years. It's possible you have as much spam as you do because many of your friends use Outlook?? Another way is to use an old slow [way cheap]computer with it's own email address for nothing but personal email..same monitor and stuff can be used with a switch. Don't use common people names or names of things and a number in an email address because address generator programs do that first and second.
