Hi sol,
Nice to see you again. I agree with your comments.
I just did the test with a "GK Connaisseur", "100% Oxygen Cleaned
Paper" coffee filter.
After 10 minutes, it was obvious that adding salt was not necessary.
The white silver chloride dispersion was the same strength as for a
normal salt test.
Adding ordinary household ammonia caused the solution to become
clear.
Just for reference, the relevant equations are:
NaCl + H2O --> Na(+) + Cl(-) + H2O
Salt dissolves in water
Ag(+) + OH(-) + Na(+) + Cl(-) --> AgCl(ppt) + NaOH
Silver ion + hydroxyl ion + salt --> silver chloride and sodium
hydroxide
Adding ammonia:
AgCl(s) + 2NH3(aq) --> [Ag(NH3)2]+(aq) + Cl-(aq)
Silver chloride + ammonia --> silver ammonia complex plus chlorine
ion
The conclusion is the filter paper contained lots of salt, NaCl.
The marketing phrases used tend to be meaningless for our needs.
We try to avoid contaminating the cs and generator with cleaning
solutions such as bleach, vinegar, and other household cleaners. So
it makes little sense to add contamination by filtering the cs.
Best Wishes,
Mike M
