Check the sleeve that pushes up on the shaft. If may be pushed up so far that it is rubbing the bottom of the top. If so then pull it down slighly so it clears (wiggle a knife blade in between the sleeve and the top). Since adding oil made it work, it sounds like it is rubbing, which it should not do.
