Hi Zeb -
Addressing two issues:
===============
VITAMIX
The VitaMix is VERY different from both juicers and blenders. VitaMix
uses whole foods. In my experience, juicers do just that - remove the
juice. The pulp is discarded, and pulp has many nutrients. Blenders
are not as powerful as VitaMix. I currently have a juicer and a
blender, but I am discarding them now that I have the VitaMix. The
VitaMix can do it all, doesn't discard anything (other than a banana
must be peeled and citrus such as orange and grapefruit, etc., need the
rind removed, leaving as much white under the rind as possible - the
white has great nutritional value, too). The VitaMix IMO is more
effective and provides better nutrition than a juicer.
The VitaMix no way compares to a blender. I made that mistake when my
neighbor who has an older VitaMix, offered to mix up a soup for me when
I was sick. I told her I had a blender and thanked her very much for
her offer. Neighbor told me no way my blender could do what the VitaMix
could, and turned out my neighbor was right on. About 10-14 days after
the neighbor's offer, I found in our "junk" mail an ad for VitaMix. Ron
and I ordered it after some major consideration (it's pricey) and
viewing the VCR tape neighbor loaned me.
We went for the top of the line offer, the whole enchilada! - about
$700-750 (don't remember exactly). Purchase included all the cookbooks,
getting started DVD, VitaMix base (Super 5000 power unit), the large
half-gallon container, the 32-oz compact container, the extra container
with dry blades (for grinding and kneading grains/breads) plus whole
grains cookbook, plus cutting board and utensils, and lastly the tamper
to push any foods down to the blades.
It is an awesome, wow-me type machine. We love it! Highly recommend
it! You can get just basics - don't have to purchase all the stuff we
purchased. As I said, we purchased top of the line with all the extras,
but VitaMix offers various options. Check it out

IODINE
I'm not Sol, but ....
Our daughter has been diagnosed as allergic to iodine. Daughter is soon
to be 26 yo, but when she was a young teen, she had an ingrown big toe
nail to abscess and doc said soak in betadine (today I would use CS but
didn't know about it then). Daughter's foot swelled everywhere the
betadine touched. Back to doc. He said she was allergic to iodine and
to be cautious about any contrast dyes containing iodine. Sounds to me
that you did the right thing.
Hope all this helps,
Susan

Susan can you use the vita mix the same way as a juicer? I thought
that a vita mix was just a high powered blender that crushed ice and
fruit. Does it work as effectively as a regular juice extractor? I
have been wanting to buy a good juicer but find them so cumbersome.
sol, have you ever had a test with contrast dyes? I told a tech that I
was allergic and she told me that I had no choice and that i would
need to take appropriate measure like steroids or benedryl to offset
the symptoms. I choose not to have the test.
