The warning you receive is because .zip files can contain any type of files, including malicious files or applications. Browsers now warn users about downloading .zip files as a matter of course. The Timeline.zip file is fine – it’s just the same files with the executable for Jetty.
You do not need to use Jetty – any webserver, whether on your own computer or a networked server, will do just fine. You should use a webserver, though, because of how the timeline files are loaded. It is possible to make Timeline work without a webserver, but this requires some manual configuration that most people shouldn’t bother with. It also prevents some features from working correctly. Timeline is meant to work as part of a website or web application. Anyone can use it, for personal or corporate use. If you are just looking to use it on your own to keep track of events in your writing, you may find it a bit more cumbersome than you’d like. There are dedicated applications for managing events – BeeDocs Timeline 3D for Mac, Timeline Maker Pro for PC, as two examples. These are, of course, paid applications, but they might save you time in configuring and programming compared to Simile Timeline. If you wish to proceed with Simile Timeline, feel free to ask questions on this list and we’ll try our best to help. --Mike From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Elizabeth Davies Sent: Monday, March 09, 2015 6:31 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [Simile-Widgets] Need help installing Timeline... got danger warning on timeline_source.zip file I'm an author. Timeline looks handy for a complex project. I'm probably three times as old as anyone on this forum, so I've been using computers since the early 1990s, but I need help now and then when I tackle something new to me. I have a standalone computer (no network). I don't have a webserver. No need for anyone but me to use Timeline. I've downloaded timeline_libraries_version2.3.0 and found instructions in readme--"No web server? The timeline project includes a small webserver called Jetty (use the timeline_source.zip file) a) install the Java runtime from Sun b) unzip timeline_source.zip to an install directory c) Open a shell or command prompt to the install directory and type: [win32]> run [unix/macosx]> chmod +x run; ./run and then point your browser to http://127.0.0.1:9999/timeline/ " BUT when I tried to download the timeline_source.zip file, my computer warned me that it "is not commonly downloaded and could be dangerous." 1) It is dangerous? 2) Is Timeline actually meant only for use by commercial organizations and not an individual who's simply trying to work out who's doing what when in an 8-book mystery novel series?
