Something I've been curious about is how the dreamer, projecting only illusion, can make use of that illusion to relax denial. I guess I can see how the experience of suffering can lead to the willingness to cease the denial and consider a better way. Is that how it must seemingly occur?

Yes, all "representation" is of the unreal, for the symbols of representation themselves are unreal. Only reality can reveal reality.
As to the screen suddenly going blank, that is only as pertains to the illusions entertained there. Reality's report never goes blank, but simply gets supplied continuous streams of overlay imagery. That does not mean reality's report is imagery, but that denial has established the belief that seeing is seeing imagery, and that knowledge is a parade of thoughts, thus perpetuating the idea that supplying these endlessly is necessary.
One does not need to try to blank the perception screen, but simply look at spirit as self instead...a type of looking they are likely unaccustomed to, and which when attempting they often become disappointed because it does not meet their erroneous criteria for "determining" that they are seeing. A subject for another time.
Illusions appear as the 2-edged sword, giving what is believed desirable and then betraying vision by giving also what is abhorred and feared. Those who live by that sword, also die by it...and neither the "life" they cling to, nor the "death" they run from are real. They keep trying to judge rightly among marriage guest who are not really present (i.e.-right and wrong, desirable and undesirable)...rather than relaxing the judgment (choosing) and waiting until their previous requests of this nature dissipate in order to see reality's report (and then not judge it to be absent because it does not and cannot meet erroneous criteria about seeing).
