Actually, I would advise against using ifconfig manually to configure interfaces under OSX, except for testing. Otherwise you have to get the command to run at startup yourself. (Which is not deathly difficult, but no other admin is going to think you would do it this way. ifconfig works great on BSD and boot time, and this is probably all MacOSX cakk internally.
