Whois is asking the domain registration. A SMTP server that checks for the validity, asks a DNS though, which is a totally different instance. So, if you can verify your presence in whois, it'll only tell you that you're still owning it. But you also need to get your servers known to the DNS service, which requires you to set up the proper Name Servers. Are you sure you've done this?
