Dan,

I have SIMS running on my machine here at home (Mac clone running Mac OS
9.1, Open Transport 2.7.6), and I use Outlook Express 5.0.4[1] to read and
send mail.

Every few days or so, when I go to collect my mail from my SIMS account,
Outlook Express will crash with an unhandled PowerPC exception (I think) at
qrun+100.

It only ever crashes like this when retrieving mail from SIMS (and not from
any of five other accounts I check), and I was wondering if anyone here
knows whether this is a SIMS bug, an Outlook Express bug, or an Open
Transport bug. Or maybe some other problem within the OS. Certainly if I try
to kill Outlook Express ("es"), Open Transport is destroyed in the process
and I have to try to reboot, killing a few other processes along the way
that were affected by Open Transport getting broken and freeze when told to
exit, including SIMS.

I'm not super knowledgeable in such things, but my first, best guess would be that you are trying to do something you really shouldn't -- running a web server, mail server, and eMail client, all in the same box. I don't know your personal situation, as regarding computers you have, but if you can, try running the mail client in another box. This problem sounds like a conflict between SIMS, Open Transport & Outlook Express. Barring that, try running some other client, such as Eudora, and see if the problem persists -- perhaps Outlook doesn't like this arrangement.

(This is one of those times when I wish I could succeed in getting 9.2.2 to install on this, for a better copy of Open Transport)

You could try downloading an updated version of OT from Apple's website? That might help, although I'm dubious of your chance for success.

There is no clear indication of any cause whatsoever to this problem. The Mac is always on (as it runs a Web server too), and this qrun+100 crash can occur the evening I last rebooted it, or it can wait for several days. It may not even happen in time before something else crashes me out.

Which web server package are you using? You could try shutting it down, however, I don't think this is where your problem lies, but it would help eliminate that as a possibility. I still keep coming back to running Outlook Express in another box, if at all possible.

Any help would be appreciated :)

Well, hope I've been of *some* help? :-) I run an FTP, mail & web server, so I share your frustration - I'm just fortunate enough to be able to run them in a separate box from my 'everyday driver' so to speak. Good luck!
