Small clarification, the ACK isn't necessarily required BEFORE the BYE, it
is just required to complete the initial Invite transaction, to stop
retransmits of the final response to the Invite. The ACK is part of the
Invite transaction, the BYE is a separate transaction. It should not be
necesary for the first transaction to complete before issuing another
request such as BYE or Cancel.

My apologies if I misunderstand your reply, which is paraphrased below:

Note: "send BYE instead of sending an ACK for a final response". This is
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
what I was pointing out as being in error. You MUST send an ACK. The ori-
ginal poster wanted to know (I believe) if it was okay to send a BYE to a
call leg a UAC does not want to maintain, or if an ACK was needed before
the BYE. Clearly, an ACK is needed before the UAC can issue a BYE.
