Proxying the UA's REGISTER through my intermediate proxy and modifying its contact address ought to work, so long as the Registrar/Softswitch doesn't object to the split-personality registration.
I had a look at the 3gpp stuff and this looks promising too. The PATH Draft (http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-willis-sip-path-03.txt) defines a method to load the Route Set into the Registrar and have it communicate via the intermediate proxy for inbound calls. Well, you have to be able to control something. If all you have control over is the configuration of the UA, then you need to work with that. Perhaps you could change it to treat your box as the outbound proxy for the UA. If you can proxy the REGISTER messages from the UA, then you could potentially hack the REGISTER, replacing the contact address with one that references your proxy again.
