Right, I've been trying to say double recording is a better solution than rewriting, because rewriting is likely to break stuff, and we haven't found anything that breaks from double recording. That's the argument for deprecating (at least to a SHOULD level rather than prohibiting) rewriting.

I'm not suggesting we prohibit double recording.
