Respectfully, if the little red lights don't go on and off promptly when
users expect them to, they complain.

If a user deletes a message using any interface at all, and the little
red light doesn't go off within some small number of seconds, the user
_will_ complain.  We've had lots of bugs over the years that demonstrate
this.
