First, I'd point out that you would not have had these issues if you had a new
Polycom phone out of the box. This is why you were asked to check the leases
file. If you didn't see a lease for the Polycom, it speaks volumes. If the
phone WAS reset, and the webu GUI showed other information, it means it is
getting configuration from another source.
Sipx IS easy, but one needs to understand the fundamentals of DNS and DHCP
lying underneath the provisioning services. Even so, a single phone that is
manually configured with another service can be maddening, but this is really a
phone issue and not a sipx issue, since it was touched before your sipx
installation came into existence.
When you push out the config and the phone does not reboot, it means the phone
does not recognize the bootp server as being the sipx server, and rebooting the
phone manually should not be necessary. The sipx server sends it a boot message
(via dhcp options), it does not have to be registered to get the signal to
reboot.
All of your issues right now seem to be very decidedly with a phone that is not
within your control (or sipx's), as someone did something to it before. If this
is the case, you might want to make sure the provisioning server is manually
set to the IP address of your sipx server. I'd suggest making the dafault
provisiong method FTP, and inputting the ipa ddress of your sipx server.
Do you have more than one active dhcp server on the network where the phone
resides?

is “easy”to setup are totally wrong.<o:p></o:p>
I can setup an Asterisk server and get my phones and trunks towork “properly”
truly in less than an hour. No guess work…<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
Anyway…<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
I have followed the instructions resetting to factory defaultson the phone but
in my case the key combination was different it’s1,3,5,7, which seemed to have
reset the phone. But when I gained access to GUIinterface (thanks for the
username and password) I found few static entries inthere pointing to a
different server, bizarre…in any case I have removedthese manually and rebooted
the phone.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
The phone deosn’t reboot by itself every time I push orupdate the config file,
I have to power cycle it manually. I think you can onlyreboot the phone from
sipX GUI if the phone is already registered, which in mycase it’s never
registered.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
The way I setup the server, I only run NON HA setup, is asfollows:<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
Use single Centos CD 3.11<o:p></o:p>
I chose all services to run on the server, DHCP, DNS, NTP<o:p></o:p>
During setup I configure the “Domain name” =host name i.e.
“server1.domain.com” and NOT “domain.com”.I think this easier if I have no
HA.<o:p></o:p>
Add users (use defaults)<o:p></o:p>
Add phone from drop down list using MAC address<o:p></o:p>
Add the user (Line) to the phone<o:p></o:p>
Save and send the profile.<o:p></o:p>
Reboot the phone.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
Is there anything else I should do or change to make sure thatthis setup works
“every time” without having to go through allthis drama?<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
It seems there are valid leases for both my Grandstream andPolycom phones as

http://sipx-wiki.calivia.com/index.php/Troubleshooting_Polycom_SoundPoint_Phone#How_to_reset_to_factory_defaults
It is important that when you push out a profile to a phone, that is reboots by
itself, this gives you an indication that DHCP is working bysending out the
proper bootp information. It would be helpful to know if thephone is rebooting
WITHOUT manually touching the phone when you push theprofile to it.
You should NOT set a password on the phone as a MACaddress. The sipxconfig
server will set that in the profile as it isconfigured.
You should check the leases file at:
/var/lib/dhcpd/dhcpd.leases
to make sure it is listed as an active lease in there.

Hi Tony,
Yes I reboot the phone every time I make a change on the server.
I have fired up wireshark and it seems that the phone is trying to register
with a different server. Example: my sipX server address is 192.168.20.253,
while the phone is trying to register to 192.168.1.241.
By using the keypad on the phone and going into
Menue->Status->Lines->Servers Status it is showing the wrong IPaddress with
an asterisk next to it. Not sure where the phone has got this IP address
from.
This phone has been used before by other people so I made sure, before I
started, to factory reset it by pressing the following key combination
1,3,5,7 and then typing the MAC address as the password.
I would have thought that this would reset the phone completely but
obviously not.
Now I am trying to figure out the GUI password, maybe there are some
settings on the GUI that need to be defaulted.
My other Grandstream phone is finally registered successfully, this means
that DHCP, DNS and all is working good from server perspective.
Any feedback on how to completely factory reset this damn phone would be of
great help.
Cheers
yakout

Did the phone reboot when you sent the profile? Did you set the phone to use
ftp or not?
You should be able to use the domain name, not the hostname or ipaddress.
Are you sure the phone is getting the ipaddress from the dhcpd on the
sipxecs server? Looking at the leases file will tell you.
Did you make sure "named" is running? How about sipxecs services?
If centos 5...
service named status
service sipxpbx status
Post your results.

Subject: [sipx-users] Registration Prooblems
Hi All,
I am having problems getting the simplest of tasks to work properly so that
I can at least move on to next steps. I can't get my Polycom Soundpoint 320
to register to my sipX server.
My setup:
1- The server, I installed my server using the Centos ISO CD (version
3.11.4). I set it up as NON HA running all services (DNS, DHCP, NTP). During
setup I have chosen to enter only my domain name under "SIP DomainName" and
NOT my Host name, which I believe makes for DNS SRV record.
2- The configuration, I have created a new user (200) with all the
default settings, nothing special. Then I added the polycom 320 phone using
the drop down list, I entered the MAC address of the phone etc... Then I
added a Line which is the only user I created (200). I made sure to "Send
Profile" after I finished.
3- The phone, I am using a new Polycom Soundpoint 320
4- The network, I have both my phone and my server connected to a cisco
2950 switch (all on the same VLAN)
What happens:
1- I connected the phone to the switch and powered on. The phone
received an IP address from the server and also received the profile, hence
the number (200) was showing on the screen and also the correct date/time.
This all means that DHCP server is working fine.
2- NO REGISTRATION, the phone never registers to the server NEVER, no
matter what I did.
What have I done:
1- When I was faced with this problem, I ran the script
/usr/bin/sipx_reset_cd and changed the "SIP Domain Name" to hostnamerather
than Domain name.
2- Resent the phone profile again and rebooted the phone. NOTHING
HAPPENED.
I kind of have a feeling that this is due to DNS.
What am I doing wrong?
Is there any way to disable DNS and test using IP address?
Your help is appreciated.
Thanks
Yakout
