Thanks Scott, this wasn't clear before...

After configuring an user on Sipx to register the gateway, I got again a 
SIP 407 message.

After reading the thread, you confirmed me that the problem wasn't on 
the sipx side, so I checked the gateway config and the call routing on 
the legacy pbx side.

On both there are some config issues: on the Patton gateway side, user 
authentication credentials were specified without the keyword "default"; 
on the legacy pbx side called numbers were sent to the gateway with the 
wrong PSTN prefix.

Now everything seems to work.
