I don't think anybody said that... I just don't think anybody has
specific information about that product...

I'd say that if you can setup SRV records in tinyDNS then it can
definitely be use with sipXecs.

Thanks to all for the great advice. So - the upshot as I am able to
discern it is I really can't use tinyDNS with sipX?

Dear Mr. Ehle,

I too had some difficulty getting DNS set up correctly for
sipXecs. I found the explanation at
http://sipx-wiki.calivia.com/index.php/DNS_Configuration helped out A
LOT. At our location, the sipXecs server is the only machine not
running Windows. Trying to extrapolate the information found at
http://sipx-wiki.calivia.com/index.php/DNS_Configuration and converting
that into something that makes sense in the Windows world was a bit of a
challenge, but I did finally get it working. I would recommend that if
you continue to have problems with DNS, that you consider using BIND
(the DNS Server that sipXecs natively supports) that is part of the
sipXecs Installation Single CD. The reason I say that is because I
found out after that fact that Windows DNS services do not support these
kind of entries:

example.com. IN NAPTR 2 0 "s" "SIP+D2T" ""
_sip._tcp.example.com.

example.com. IN NAPTR 2 0 "s" "SIP+D2U" ""
_sip._udp.example.com.

. . .whereas BIND does.

IRT your question "does the sipx server have a TFTP server
in it" the answer is YES. The full path to the sipXecs TFTP root is
/var/sipxdata/configserver/phone/profile/tftproot .

See your original quoted E-Mail below for the rest. . .

Subject: [sipx-users] Complete sipX newbie needs help

Folks -

I am trying to get sipx working on my network - It looks like great
stuff! I have a server loaded from the live CD, it is running fine, and
I am able to talk to it through the web interface. I have some Linksys
SPA941's that I would like to test it with, and some SNOM 320's on the
way, too.

I have some questions about how to set up my network with sipx. The DNS
adviser complains about a lot of records that I do not have in my DNS
server. I am using a pfsense firewall and it uses tinydns. Does anyone
have any experience configuring this?

Also - does the sipx server have a TFTP server in it,

See my comment above. . .

does the system use one, and can I use the one that is already on the
network?

Yes you can. Please see
http://sipx-wiki.calivia.com/index.php/DHCP_Configuration for more
information. Please note in the example below. . .

option tftp-server-name "your sipxpbx hostname";

. . .that you would need to replace sipxpbx with the hostname of your
existing TFTP server. Also note that if you do not use the TFTP server
on the sipXecs box, you will probably have to place the phone
configuration and/or firmware files on your non-sipX TFTP server
manually, which in my opinion would be more trouble than it's worth.
sipXecs has some awesome phone configuration features built in to it.
If you decide to use a different TFTP server, I'm thinking that you will
cancel those out unless you use something like RSYNC to somehow
synchronize /var/sipxdata/configserver/phone/profile/tftproot with the
TFTP root of your other server (my two cents).

Is there a spiX for dummies anywhere?

I have found the sipXecs Wiki to be an invaluable resource! Make sure
to check it out. . . http://sipx-wiki.calivia.com/index.php/Main_Page

I have been following this list for a number of days now, and it would
appear that most of you all already have a system up and running and
know what you are doing.

Thanks!

Mark
