Several things to bring up...
Not a "great idea" to try to separate voice/fax calls. Using separate DID's
would be better.
Use a Patton PRI gateway, they work tremendously well. You can take certain DID
numbers and re-route to a FXS gateway, which could in turn be used to dial a
Multi-tech digit finder (rebroadcasts digits) connected to a fax finder, giving
you a diskless fax method (emailed as pdf). Patton has a strong dial plan and
rule execution function. At the same time, FXS ports could be used for outbound
faxing.
Easier still... host the faxing somewhere else. Noone seems to be able to
properly support t.38 yet, but if it comes in over PRI, you ought to handle it
as t.38 as far as you can.
We used to have fax to did over a siptrunk, but then the ITSP kept breaking it.

I'm hoping someone on this list can help clear some things up for me.
I purchased the eBook and have read everything I can find online but faxing is
still not clear to me.

We've had good results testing combined voice/fax calls to DIDs using an
asterisk flavor. However, none of the asterisk flavors give me the redundancy
that I'm looking for while not having to get into complex environments such as
opensips and other tools, which is where I was heading. We're still using
asterisk for other things but am looking at this project to perhaps move over
to.

What I need is to offer my users both voice and faxing to the same DID. I
obviously don't want to hurt the voice quality and have read that sipxecs isn't
a great believer in combining both. Fine, I agree. I'm more than willing to
have fax calls routed to a fax server. However, I'm not able to find enough
information on how to go about this, what I need, etc.

To begin with, I'll be using a PRI to SIP gateway in front of sipxecs. I've
been thinking about buying a used AS5350 or MC3810 to trial this system out as
these are so cheap used.

I wondered if I could buy a gateway which would be able to recognize a voice or
fax call, if voice, send it to sipxecs, if fax, send it to my fax server, along
with the DID info so that the fax server can convert the fax then email it to
the proper user. Not quite sure what gateway might do this, let alone work very
well with sipexecs and allow me to expand PRI's as we go.

But in reading about sipxecs, I see there are a LOT of fax functions built in
and this is where another bit of confusion comes in for me. Are these functions
so that I can in fact simply take the calls from the gateway and then sipxecs
itself can forward those to another device, such as my fax server?

Which ever way I do this, I would like to keep voice quality way up there so am
happy to send to another device or, if sipxecs can actually deal with faxes and
I've not seen that yet, am more than happy to throw what ever hardware I need
to (servers) in order to make this work well.

ANY help would be very appreciated on this matter.

Mike
