You can indeed use your LAN as a way to simulate the 'public Internet'.
All you really need to test basic remote worker is a 2 NATs. 2 phones
and an sipXecs.
Connect the WANs of the two NATs together by connecting them to the same
network (LAN, public internet, x-over cable). Put one phone behind one
NAT and put sipXecs behind the other and you are setup. Follow the
instructions in

heet to find out how to configure sipXecs for remote workers.
