On a related note, I was wondering if SLA has the following capability:

  • Call on shared line 1234 is placed on hold.
  • User dials call pickup code *781234 to retrieve call from hold.
Will that work? Maybe? Perhaps it's done a different way?

Shared line has a limit of how many extensions can have the line (somewhere in the 20's if I recall correctly) and each line requires a line appearance on the phone. I have 2 departments that managed to scale a Norstar to ~70 extensions and something like 12 analog lines which makes using the Shared Line feature impossible as I would have to have a $400+ set at each desk (650 plus sidecar) to see all the lines plus there are technical limitations to the SLA engine.

SLA is really good for replacing small key systems with a max of 5 lines but it doesn't scale well.

Migrating a 30+ user department off an old Norstar to sipX is
difficult because of the "line" mentality. The front desk operator
receives a call, places it on hold and pages(ewww!!) the desired party
telling them to "pick up line 1" at which point the party the call is
destined for presses the "Line 1" key and begins talking.

This is so heavily rooted in their mindsets that they absolutely
detest doing anything different.

In 4.2 there are shared lines, so they'll get the old system back.
