I found at last a mention of the startup flag for freeswitch: http://lists.freeswitch.org/pipermail/freeswitch-users/2010-March/054412.html -vm is the actual startup flag for freeswitch. I haven't been able to find a lot of info on exactly what it does. Having the same letters as the abbreviation for voicemail has made searching a bit difficult.
