Tim - I did this for a while (over a hear) I had sipx on gcgov.local - The work around mentioned is under System -> Domain Domain Aliases (see attached picture).
You could have the Domain Name as your ".local" and put in an alias that the outside world would use (i.e. put in sipx.internetdomain.com as an alias). This will NOT work for xmpp federation (the instant messaging integration with the outside world). That is why I wound up using our actual domain - garrettcounty.org and creating internal/external SRV records for this. It really wasn't that bad...I did do a re-install of sipx and exported/imported the users/etc. - a bit of a pain. I'd highly recommend biting the bullet unless you have many users on the system and can't deal with some scheduled down time...otherwise you'll have to write off the xmpp federation functionality.
