I must have misunderstood the engineer.
Salesperson gave me the options below and said I would have to go with
the 2 separate devices. The tech had a bit of an accent but I swear he
said I could configure a port on the 8 port device as an outbound
emergency POTS line.

OPTION 2:

Patton has a combo device also (2fxs/2fxo). In either case to
interface with
the old pbx or key systems you want fxs devices to connect to
the old CO
ports on those old systems and give those pbs "dial tone"
which can then do
a sip register to verizon if needed.
The patton dial plan is flexible enough (example) with a fxo
device, if
someone dials "911" we can have it drop an active call, and
complete this
emergency call.

We have 50+ locations where we cannot currently practically
put in new
Sipx systems because of cabling issues. They all have old
school systems
with 8 to 15 handsets and 4 to 8 POTS lines. As part of our
overall VoIP
contract with Verizon, they are putting in FXS boxes at each
of theses
sites so we can use Verizon SIP services without replacing the
infrastructure.
Verizon uses Mediatrix 4100s for this. It is a 4104, 4108, or 4116
depending on the numbers of POTS lines currently in use at the
clinic.
We are leaving one emergency POTS line for backup outbound
dialing only.
This is critical that outbound dialing is not affected if the sip
trunk/wan circuit goes down.
At our pilot site, Verizon put in a 4108, and everything
seemed to work
fine until we tested the emergency scenario. The 4108 simply
bypasses/patches one of the ports directly to the emergency
POTS line.
This doesn't work for us. We never know what line these phone
systems
are set to use, and our testing has shown that different
handsets in the
facilities pickup different outbound lines. We inherited all
of these
clinics, so there is every type of PBX known to man. Attempting to
reprogram them is not an option. Verizon's plan was to add a
second
device called a Mediatrix 1204. It appears to basically be an
FXO box.
They also were going to use a new firmware for the 4100 box
that allowed
it to fail over to sending its sip traffic to the 1204 if the
primary
Verizon sip trunk was inaccessible. The 1204 then sent it out
a POTS
line. I didn't really like the complexity of the design, but I was
wiling to go along with it because Verizon was pretty much
going to eat
the cost since their setup didn't perform as they advertised.
Surprise, surprise, at the last minute, we find out it doesn't
work. The
new code on the 4100 is failing their tests and not working as
advertised.
After this discussion, I told them they need to look outside their
'product catalog' and see if there is a more appropriate product.
What I need is an FXS box that can intelligently route calls out a
backup POTS line if the SIP trunk goes down. Does anyone know of a
product from Audiocodes, Patton, etc, that can accomplish this?
I will be glad to discuss off list if anyone wants to give me
a hand here.
