It's possible it's his setup, but until he returns, I will not be able
to tell. This was the first time to use his current setup for real calls.

I've run several tests here locally and am able to reproduce a problem
with similar symptoms. In my tests, it is very easy to get a mic to pick
up audio bleed from the headphones, even from ear-buds. If the mic
sensitivity is set too high and/or the headphone volume is turned up too
high, the callee can hear an echo of himself.

I've recommended the following to the VIP:

* run the VoIP speed test that Tony recommended and send me the results
* adjust the mic and headphone volume settings
* buy a better headset which has a unidirectional noise-canceling mic
and earphones which do not bleed audio.

He has used his current headset with Skype in the past and does not
recall having this problem. This may simply be perception however. No
one ever expected a Skype call to be very good so most problems were
disregarded outright. He has higher hops for remote VoIP calls through sipX.

I've also suggested that we look into keeping at least one POTS line,
thus reducing the number of hops to the PSTN as Tony suggested, but
again that will have to wait until he returns.

Additionally, I've suggested he try his Skype account to see if he gets
a better call, but I do not know if he's tried that and, if so, what the
result is.

Thanks for everyone's feedback!

Stiles
