I was an Ubuntu user myself and it was hard to let go of it when I
joined eZuce last year so I lobbied a bit to start packaging for Ubuntu
for the selfish reason that I wouldn't want to migrate my beloved Ubuntu
Desktop to Fedora. I got exactly the same answer as Todd posted here.
In particular, I wasn't able to come up what the particular benefit
would be to justify supporting Ubuntu/Debian.
On top of this, I did try to compile libsipXproxy in Ubuntu 10.x and
created a simple proxy app just to prove if it would compile. It did
compile, however I am getting intermittent deadlocks on startup. Guess
where? The SipUserAgent constructor. Stepping on a bug like this and
not being able to justify why we should pursue it just so I can code
using my favorite Desktop is definitely a show stopper.
And lastly, we all know that packaging is one hell of a job. It
requires a full time effort and someone spends money on salaries just to
get an ISO out for a particular version. Without good enough
justification, I don't think funding it would see the light of day.

More reliable how?
From the perspective of this application, I've not seen any
reliability issues related to the operating system, so I would be
curious as to what is more reliable specifically?
What functionality have you seen applied to this application on these
other operating systems. From a discussion point, we should be
providing specifics if the community is to become educated on the
differences, and have meaningful dialogue that could lead to
improvements in the application overall. And since this is a
telecommunications system, hopefully features that enhance the user or
admin perspective of the product. Keeping in mind this is an
Enterprise application, and not designed for home users, small
business, etc., if there are Enterprise type features that would
benefit the project, it would be good to discuss them in detail and
decide as a community what features should be embraced, and which ones
are not legitimately a reasonable expectation for this particular project.
Bare in mine, the majority of the work done on this product is done
for its commercial value by one or more companies with commercial
releases of the product, unless it provides that commercial value,
it's unlikely to make it into the build unless it is donated by a
member of the user community.

Yes it's a purpose built application, but it can be extended with
other functionality on a single machine.
Personal Experience: I used CentOS, Ubuntu Server and Debian, and have
found Ubuntu Server/Debian environments to be a bit more reliable.

Just a question here, as I don't understand the motivation for wanting
it on Ubuntu. Since this is a purpose built application for
telecommunications, and it is generally run on it's own server
platform without other applications, like browser, firewall, etc.,
what it the motivation for wanting it on Ubuntu? Is it a different
set of CLI commands that is more familiar, are their some features on
Ubunto that are not on Centos that would benefit the
telecommunications applications?
Really, I would like to understand what drives this so I can
understand some additional value adds that Ubuntu can provide to this
server application that might be missing today, and available with
other versions of Linux. I understand Ubuntu can be installed and
give you a rich Windoze type environment for a workstation -- but I'm
wondering how any of that ties into the telecom pieces of sipXecs and
the practical application of it.
Lets discuss it in this usergroup.

I think someone really needs to determine if all the prerequisites are
easily attainable on Ubuntu before an attempt to package it can occur.
Since it is meant as a single purpose server, there is not a lot of
focus on "how many different platforms" it can run on...
I can't imagine anything being available on Centos/Red Hat which isn't
available on Ubuntu or Debian. In my experience, it's typically the
other way around. So I suspect it is possible. I'm rather new to the
platform, but I'm going to give this build a go in the coming weeks.
