We had an oem appliance made for our deployments. We tried atoms at first but the performance was not good enough. Startup time took forever but then would settle down and work. The problem we had was that periodically java would spike to 100% for even just a few minutes and then VM and AA would shutter. We ended up settling on mobile Core2 Duo procs. We have deployments up to 500 handsets on that base unit. And its fanless too...all solid state. We use mobile Core i5's in our larger unit. As for SSD, we use only Intel SSD. We tried others and would get failures every now and then. the intel SSD have been flawless for us over the last two years or so. They also boot the appliance in about 10 seconds.
