I think one way to handle this would be to extend the database and use two
fields.

IM - user firstinitiallastname, firstname, lastname, firstname.lastname, or
NON etc. so the system creates the correct
allow aliases for IM (i'm not sure how openfire handles that though).

I also think the same approach can be used to handle callerid (preferred DID
fireld, clikc to use as callerid field).
