Your terminology lends some confusion though and the "zone" for "
pbx.ourdomain.com" IS our ourdomain.com.

Unless you are using a sub domain. There is a good wiki article on that too.

In either case this is called split DNS and is pretty straightforward as
long as your external DNS provider supports the needed record types.
