I extracted popt-1.10.1 from the latest rpm, changed popt.rul and added the
popt-1.10.1.tar.gz to the src directory. That build fine for x86_64.

Yes, please! I'm almost through with a 3.4.1 based x86_64 approach but have
exchanged very many things, taking them mostly from the lastets svn
version. Now there's trouble under i386 with uclibc crap. I'd prefer to go
with 3.5.2, but in my environment (RHEL3) I had trouble with mklibs.sh :-(

I'd be happy to try your SRPM.
