I just commented out the line in /etc/rpm/macros.prelink.

For your zlib.rul patch, I'm not convinced that you still need to set
the -fPIC after you have updated to 1.2.2 - can you test that or have
you already done so?

Just a note about updating the kernel version - I would imagine most (if
not all) of the kernel patches in the patches directory need to be
updated as well.
