I seem to recall encountering a similar problem when I was using UYOK - I think you can just bypass the check and it should be fine.  Perhaps you can file a bug on this?

I can't.  that one does not (or did not) have tg3 or nvidia ethernet 
drivers....doesn't do me much good to look for a dhcp server on 
loopback :)

The si_prepareclient runs the use your own kernel stuff and generates 
a kernel and initrd just fine.  If that's going to be the case, we 
should be able to USE our own kernel, no?
