I had an almost identical problem a while ago. I know the problem 
happened in Skim. I am pretty sure the problem did NOT happen in 
Preview. However, I do think the problem happened in the "PDF Browser 
Plugin" from Schubert|it.

The problem was that Skim wasn't rendering BOLD text. In fact, every 
time the PDF file was updated (with a new LaTeX run), Skim would toggle 
between showing bold and not showing bold. Opening the document in 
Preview was fine.

I'm guessing that the PNG that was linked from this thread also showed 
bold characters not being rendered.

I was going to submit a bug report, but after opening and closing the 
document a few times, the problem went away, and I haven't noticed in since.
