Ok, this means that you are running the Skim application from within the mounted image. The good news is that everything seems to run - you only need to clear up a little bit. Make sure that you have in your applications folder the actual Skim program (the one with glasses which starts Skim). Then you can safely remove all other Skim files in Applications folder. You can also select the Icons with the mouse and then press Cmd-i (Apple key on the keyboard together with letter i). This will bring up the Info window. Here you can see as the very first entry what kind of file you are dealing with. You need to keep the file that says: type (or Art in German): Program and you can trash the one that says type: Volume Note that this installation routine is the standard way of installing on Mac OS X. It seems to me that all that went wrong in your case was that you accidentally dropped the installation file (the volume that needs to be mounted and that contains Skim and the link to Applications) into your Applications folder and this now creates confusion.
