Well, its been a long weekend. I just got back from the North Texas Star Party. Its along drive, just to find out your EQ mount is broke. I am very not happy now. =(
Oh well, on with life...
I am all for keeping CDC portable. My chief concern with Borland is that they are proprietary (and at least as of their latest version, not free). If what I could see is true, maybe Delphi 2005 will be free. It also looks at though 2005 will support C#. If that is true, it will facilitate converting the code.
I agree that your first priority should be finishing up the 3.0 version. There is no point in losing features or compatablilty, no matter what direction this project may take.
When it comes to a choice of IDEs, any is fine with me. As I spend most of my day looking at an xterm and an emacs buffer, any kind of IDE is new and shiny to me.
The chief argument towards moving to C# is this. Mono. Mono is a cross platform alternative to the .NET framework. From what I understand of it, the same projects/code can be compiled and run on Windows, Linux, and MacOS X with no modifications.
Perhaps in the short term, along with helping you document the existing code, Mathieu and I should try to make a proof of concept with Mono. A small program that is capable of displaying the BSC with minimal interactive interface would be a good start towards understanding the issues we would have with porting the whole project.
In mid-December (the 13th to be exact) I will be leaving for Christmas vacation. I will be taking my laptop with me and will have internet access. My laptop is Windows only, so I can focus on getting a dvelopment environment setup. I won't have access to my linux box again until January, but will then be busy moving. I probably won't be completely setup and going again until late January.
On a side note, what do the two of you do for a living? Patrick, what kind of archeology? You're the first archeologist I know that can program. Of course, your also the archeologist I know.
=)
I'm a Platform/OS developer for Alcatel USA. I spend most of my day writing driver and support code for an embedded LynxOS operating system that we use in our SS7 signalling switches.
