Mel,
When I have the labels set as John recommends, (both name and
short name, and my labeled object selector for "stars" is set to 7,
I see only the greek Bayer letters for the brighter stars. The
Flamsteed numbers are also shown. My "view" is set to 90 degrees,
but even if I zoom down to 10', I see the same greek letter.
Here's another hint: In the preferences list, select Fonts, and
then make sure "Labels" is set to Ariel (in my case, Ariel 8). Does
this help?
The Ariel font has a number of foreign language letters in it, in
the extended Unicode set. You can check the Ariel font independently
by going into the .../Accessories/SystemTools/Character Map applet
on the Start menu, and then selecting Ariel in the drop-down at the
top. At character U+03B1 begins the greek alphabet. If your Ariel
doesn't look like this, then perhaps that is the problem.
Let me know what you discover.
  Regards,
Dick
