Hey Geoff! I think your solution is practicable for you or maybe other guys with a dobson. But what about owners of smaller telescopes or on a german mount? My notebook allway disturbed me, the bigger an much brighter screen blends even when coverd with dark red+gray film and the energy consumption for an astro weekend needs a 50Ah solar battery, with according weight. A smaller PDA can be powered for this time allways-on with a 1 pound battery, both fixed on the tripod. But it can be swichted on/off very fast and used with its own battery and wireless over bluetooth with adapter on telescope side.
