Esc should close a conversation window if you're using Compact view. In Default view, you don't really "close" a conversation; you just open another one in its place. In the few cases where I've seen Esc fail to close a Compact-view conversation window, Ctrl+4 then Esc has always worked.
To call a phone number that's not in your contacts, choose View, Call Phones, then type the number and press Enter.
