I can't tell from your question exactly what happened. In a one-on-one call, you can read text chats also. In a conference among Skype 4 and 5 users, you can also. If someone creates a conference with an older Skype, or via the Skype API rather than the Skype interface, you may get a message about the conference not supporting text chats. In that case though, you can still send and receive chats with individual people in the conference separately, or create a group for texting that includes everyone in the call.
