I have skype 5.1.0.104
I called my sister, I then tried to access my history to tell her the time I
sent her a message yesterday and I could not get to the list of IM's I had
sent her. I tried control 5 i even tried "view old messages" and I could not
get to them.

I can't tell from your question exactly what happened. In a
one-on-one call, you can read text chats also. In a conference among
Skype 4 and 5 users, you can also. If someone creates a conference
with an older Skype, or via the Skype API rather than the Skype
interface, you may get a message about the conference not supporting
text chats. In that case though, you can still send and receive chats
with individual people in the conference separately, or create a group
for texting that includes everyone in the call.

I scripted Space in some Skype checkbox lists, notably Send Contacts
and Add People, to check and uncheck list items. However, I then
discovered that Enter will check and uncheck these items. Enter is
handled by Skype directly, so it will work no matter what screen
reader you use.
There is a bug in Skype whereby it fails to report the states of these
checkboxes. I have filed a bug for this as of now, so hopefully that
will get fixed. In the mean time, the scripts for JAWS I posted
yesterday will make JAWS report the states of these boxes in Send
Contacts and Add People lists.
