choose default view in the view menu.
If you have a choice called compact view you are already in default view.

I honestly don't know what I'm missing here. The Skype Home window
never seems to get in my way. It's there if I want it, but it doesn't
seem to force me to look at it. Is that different for everyone else?

since many people already asked question with no response, I see no
way of get rid of this. I just sent a feature request to the Jira
asking to give us this ability, such as like a checkbox in the Skype
options. Let us see if they listen to us.
