Switch to Conversation list with Ctrl+2, arrow among conversations and enter one with Enter. Alt+numbers do work in Default view. You found the one thing I have used Compact view for in the last year or so though: If I'm just typing a lot of messages at, say, five different people in as many conversations, I like using Ctrl+Tab to move among them cyclicly. I've sometimes made that work in Default view, but it's hard to make the list of people stay what I'd like in Default view.
