You never said what screen reader you are running. skype works fine wiht nvda and others outside the box. you just need patience to use it. I can use skype in the mac with voice over after they made some external improvements to the program
a around after you hit the search button, or start typing in the contact table list the name you want. From there you should be good to go. Skype is getting more and more stream lined in my opinion. It's a learning curve but if we all take the time, we can all without scripts or with miniminal scripting work use the interface.
