To repeat: We can't shutdown the support for in-world map tiles yet,
because the existing production SL viewers need to access those tiles to
display the map. Only after we deploy an official SL viewer that uses
the S3 tiles, can we consider not creating the in-world map images.
To my knowledge, this info is totally consistent with what we said at
release of the new webmap.

Still, getting there will take times so, what can you do in the
meantime? Well, we still produce the j2c map tiles for the asset
server. We have to or existing viewers wouldn't be able to display the
map. Is the problem that you can't guess the UUID for a region tile?
It's somewhere for sure (the viewer map gets it) though I don't know
if it's accessible from an LSL script (I guess it's not or no one
would have any problem...).
It's not available in LSL, which was, of course, the subject of the
cited feature req JIRA.
That's why Lex put his off-grid service up, to map region names to UUIDs.
But Philip held forth at one point on how expensive it was to have
this stuff in the asset server...but now you're telling us it's still
there. Hmmm.
Something is going on here, and I may not have good (or maybe
"complete") information. The Subnova server is currently serving UUIDs
for textures that are (at least in the case of my region,
"Harrington", a lot more recent than I would expect given the
announcement that everything was going to go static when the new maps
went up.
Maybe something's been done to address this, and the word just hasn't
gotten out.
Anybody know?
