I know that Qwaq is further along than SL in this area. You might want to talk to them or to Croquet Hax in AW Groupies about what kind of work the OpenCroquet project has done along these lines. And for heaven's sake, youse guys got 400+ people that log into Groupies on a regular basis, many/most with highly technical backgrounds.
