1.4 would be fine for me. But since there is currently no feature, that really requires 1.4.,
compability with 1.3 should be kept.

Sounds reasonable. I dismantled some features that used nio from the tx store, because I did not think of this :( Bad luck!
One thing I really considered useful was locking all resources taking part in a transaction on the filesystem level to protect them from modification by other processes.
