Remy and Jeremy,
What about this: Jeremy - how about you getting the latest CVS and ensuring that all tests pass. Assuming that the testsuite is an indication of codebase sanity, then this should help us determine if the current CVS tips are stable enough for a release. If they aren't, get them running 100% and submit any patches. Remy - once Jeremy (et. al.) gets the testsuite passing, can you authorize him or someone else as a commiter and get them to do a release? This simple act of getting a new
To be a committer, you have to show a bit more than good will. I think that there *will be* stuff around that could be fixed (even docs), so IMO there's plenty of opportunity to do that ;-)
You can't RM something if you don't know the build procedures pretty well, know how to test, and (ideally), know the product really well so you can asses bug report severity, etc.
Then you have to upload the build, update the website, and announce the release.
So, while a new release can't happen overnight, it's not completely impossible either.
release may be just a simple task, but I believe it will help generate
some renewed interest in the product, especially if its announced to
javalobby, theserverside, javachannel, et. al. This may bring more folks
here, more hands to assist in any new features, docs, etc. and take some
of the load off the original commiters who are being hammered right now
with other things.
I never cared about announcing anything there (whether Tomcat or Slide). Jakarta's news page is read by enough people IMO.
Remy
