A couple of people mentioned Mailman. I'm just going to throw in that
I'm on a high volume list handled by mailman (sometimes upwards of 100
posts a day) and it works great. It has a number of useful options that
users can control through the web interface such as digest or realtime
mode, holiday mode (ie. stop posts until you start them up again),
mime/plaintext email, receiving your own emails sent to the list, and
acknowledgements of emails sent.
If you aren't looking for this kind of thing, another option that I
haven't seen mentioned is Minordomo. It has just the essentials and is
pretty easy to set up. I haven't done this myself but a guy at work
asked me what he should use for his machine and I suggested this since
he is far from being a guru. He got it up and running in short order.
freshmeat.net has a section for mailing list managers which you may like
to peruse before deciding what to go with. Of course if you're feeling
sadistic you could write your own with a procmail recipe ;)
